Our story

Why Armilla exists

Armilla started in Toronto in 2020. Our team comes from Element AI, the Responsible AI Institute, Deloitte, insurance companies and brokerages. We spent our first years evaluating AI systems for accuracy, robustness and fairness, and completed more than 500 evaluations across regulated industries.

Those evaluations showed us where AI fails in production. We also saw how rarely existing insurance answered for those failures. Traditional policies were written before generative AI. Most are silent on AI failure modes, and some insurers have started adding AI exclusions.

We built Armilla to insure those failures directly. In 2023 we joined Lloyd's Lab. In 2024 Armilla became the first Lloyd's Coverholder dedicated solely to AI liability insurance. In April 2025 we launched a standalone, affirmative AI liability policy. In January 2026 we raised limits to US$25 million.

Our job is to make AI adoption insurable, so your company deploys AI with the protection your customers and board expect.
